How to Sell a Diamond in Los Angeles

The Los Angeles diamond market
Los Angeles has a decentralized diamond market spread across Downtown LA, the Jewelry District on Figueroa Street, and independent jewelers in Beverly Hills and Santa Monica. The Jewelry District near Pershing Square has over 100 dealers. Beverly Hills shops tend to offer higher prices but also charge higher retail — for resale, Downtown LA is usually better. Expect 25-40% of retail for certified diamonds.
Before you sell: 5 rules
- Get an estimate first. Use our calculator to know the floor and ceiling before any conversation.
- Bring your GIA / IGI report. No certificate? Buyers will discount 10-25% because they can't verify the stone.
- Get at least 3 written offers. Los Angeles dealers know each other and will price-match the best honest offer.
- Decline trade-credit offers. Cash only. Trade-credit is worth ~50¢ on the dollar to you.
- Check licensing. Most states require secondhand diamond dealers to be licensed. Ask to see their license.
Tips for selling in Los Angeles
The Downtown LA Jewelry District (Figueroa St near 7th) has the highest concentration of buyers.
Beverly Hills jewelers are retail-focused; they pay less for resale because their overhead is higher.
LA has a large lab-grown diamond market. Natural diamonds fetch better resale here than in most cities.
Get offers from at least 3-4 shops. LA dealers are spread out, so plan a half-day for visits.
Check if the buyer is a GIA Graduate Gemologist — it indicates formal training in valuation.
